2018 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS & INFORMATION

Easy Deep Tissue: More Pressure, Less Effort (12 CE) -- $250

Do your hands or wrists hurt after a deep tissue massage?  Do you find
yourself exhausted at the end of a long day of massage?  Do you love being a massage therapist but worry you will have to quit soon because your body just can’t handle it any more?  If you answered “YES!” to one or more of these questions then this class is for you.
When we have finished you will have a solid understanding of how to safely
and productively use your body as a tool to deliver deep tissue massage; you will have practiced palpation skills with your fists, forearms and elbows and have more confidence in using these tools regularly in your work setting; and you will be able to deliver more pressure with less effort.  Therapists who have taken this course say they no longer hurt and they feel like they could practice forever.

“I used more pressure in the 2 days with Melissa in her Easy Deep
Tissue class than I have in the past 2 years. The best part is that I didn’t
feel any pain anywhere in my body afterwards. I feel so empowered after
taking Melissa’s class!” – Kelly S., LMBT

“I took Melissa’s easy deep tissue class a few weeks back.  I was already a
strong deep tissue therapist, but I always like learning new ways to use
my body more efficiently.  I learned several new techniques that felt great to
my body as a therapist.  I asked a few of my regulars what their thoughts were
and they loved the new techniques!  The neck work was, “the best you’ve
done on me!” said one client.  I will definitely use these new tools I’ve
learned in my continued practice.” – Josh R., LMBT

  • WHAT TO BRING : Set of sheets, face cradle cover and blanket if you get
    cold. Oil or lotion.

Getting Specific: Hip & Shoulder Girdles (14 CE) -- $270

Do you have clients with chronic neck and upper back pain or with sciatica
and chronic low back pain?  Wonder why they don’t get relief from working the
areas that hurt?  This course will allow you to alleviate and sometimes
eliminate these issues for your clients.

Each morning will learn ways to ask the client to actively engage muscles to
improve your palpation skills and help you isolate specific muscles in each
area, making your work more efficient and effective. Afternoons will include a demonstration of techniques for the hip or shoulder girdle, and then an exchange to practice and receive the work. Emphasis will be on discovering the source of the problem and treating that, rather than just addressing symptoms.

As with all my Deep Tissue courses, we will focus on techniques that help you give more pressure with less effort.

“I recently took Melissa’s ‘Getting Specific- Hip and Shoulder Girdle’ course.
The course was engaging, relevant, and full of great strategies I
incorporated in my practice right away. Especially enjoyed learning ways
to give my body a break while doing this work! I highly recommend Melissa’s
courses. This will not be my last!” – Lorrie Z., LMBT

Light Touch Techniques for Headaches & Migraines (7 CE) -- $135

We all have clients that experience headaches or migraines. Add new
techniques to your toolbox with this one day class. First we will talk about the causes and symptoms of different headaches.  Then I will demonstrate cranial and acupressure techniques and you will exchange with a partner to practice and experience the work. The pressure for all of the bodywork is light to medium so you can work smarter, not harder.

“Melissa and her space are very welcoming and she is a very knowledgeable,
talented and experienced massage therapist. As an instructor she
exceeded my expectations.  She is professional, on-time, sticks to the
syllabus- yet always willing to explain further or repeat something for her
students to see again, very approachable, funny and made learning the
material fun.  The course content in Melissa’s classes is undoubtedly helpful
in furthering my massage career, easy to read and understand, and efficiently
laid out.” – Emily, LMBT

  • WHAT TO BRING : Set of sheets and blanket if you get cold. Wear loose
    comfortable clothing.

Massage for Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (7 CE) -- $135

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (Part of NIH): TMJ Dysfunction (TMJD) is the second most commonly occurring musculoskeletal condition resulting in pain and disability preceded only by chronic low back pain. NIH estimates that 5 to 12% of the population suffers from TMJD.

After completing this course each participant will be able to identify the major muscles involved in TM joint movement, better understand the causes of TMJ pain, and apply specific Swedish techniques to help reduce TMJ pain.
(Note: This course covers introductory level TMJD work.)

Ethics: Buttons & Boundaries (3 CE)

This course includes a review of ethical standards applied to the massage
profession, as well as the opportunity to discuss ethical scenarios, including
dual relationships, with other therapists.

You can take this course for credit up to 4 times in a 2 year period, and
receive CE’s each time (up to 12 CE).  Each class is unique due to mix of students and topics discussed.

I have taken Melissa’s Ethics class twice, and will take it again when I need to
renew my license.  Why would I take an Ethics class more than once with the
same instructor? Wouldn’t that be boring or redundant?  No, absolutely
not.  Melissa’s way of approaching what can be rather dry material is
invigorating, thought provoking, and engaging.  She warmly invites the
class to explore ethical issues with fresh perspectives and curiosity. She gently challenges us to look broader and deeper at everyday encounters. She supports us with incisive questions and pertinent information.  In 20 years
of practice, I have taken my share of Ethics classes, as well as having been
an instructor myself.  Melissa’s engaging manner makes the material
come alive.
– Cari R., LMBT
